How to Transform Your Garage Door in Just One Weekend

Very few think about renovating their garage door, as it tends to get far less attention than other parts of the house. However, a slight upgrade can have a big impact and can boost your curb appeal dramatically, making your house feel elevated and inviting.

The best part about renovating your garage door? It’s quick and easy, allowing you to have the project completed in just one weekend. Here’s what you need to know:

There are several options when thinking about the decorative appeal of your garage doors. You can stain the wood or you can paint it. For one of our most recent projects at House Redo, we decided paint would be best-suited in keeping with the light-hearted appeal of the house.

When selecting the right color, we opted for a soft blue-gray that complimented the white exterior. We chose Benjamin Moore’s Aura exterior paint in Seattle Gray because of it’s rich vivid color and exceptional durability. With the paint color decided upon we set to work. Don't forget to prime the doors first!

Prep work was simple. We taped all the areas that do not get paint, and prepared rollers and paint brushes. We like to use ScotchBlue Sharp Lines Painter’s tape in a wide 2” size because of its ability to protect the glass panes on the doors. As for paint brushes, expert Bob Villa has a great buyer’s guide.

If you’re hoping to complete the project in one weekend, fast-drying paint is the best. It only requires a couple of hours to dry allowing a coat of primer and two coats of paint to be completed by the end of the weekend.

Here’s a quick look of the before and after. What a difference a little upgrade makes!
